The Anatomy of a Superfood Smoothie

I admitt it, I cannot live without superfood smoothies. They are my guilt-free indulgence of choice, and I am not giving them up for anything.

Call me a junkie, label me an enabler and i won't protest.

Infact, I would surrender my teeth for a superfood smoothie. That's right, whether it's a favourite green smoothie recipe of mine or one of the fruity affair. After all, when you have a blender ( Vitamix + Tribest LOVE), who needs teeth?

Ok so teeth are needed for chowing down kale chips and raw chocolate. But you get my point.

Much of my close relationship with good nutrition and healthy habits tinkering, have been founded upon the regular intake of Superfood Smoothies. Plus, having some staple easy, tasty blender friendly recipes to call upon.

So why Superfood Smoothies you ask?

Let me begin by saying that not all smoothies are created equal!

A cup or two of purely fruit smoothie would never get me through my daily demands (of choice) these days.

This is where Superfood Smoothies take the glory line! They are splendidly filling and nutritionally packed-to-the-max: full of antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and other inherent goodness that really gets you glowing! A meal like this a day is unbelievavle for solid energy.

Possibly thee single easiest health concoction of all to whip up at home too, you really can’t mess up a smoothie.

We are busy busy people, who need filling nutrient dense smoothies that will give us unlimited energy, rev up our metabolism and keep us satisfied until a mid morning snack or lunch.

I have to admitt, it's not often you won't find me gushing about (to any and all who will hear me out) the superfood smoothie and all it's phenomenal power.

Superfood Smoothies are good for anytime of the day nourishment, but are especially one of my favorite breakfast fuel to power up. A nice nutrient-dense smoothie in the a.m goes down quick, so I don’t have to wake up super early to prep and digest, (that's extra time with my duvet) and I get the energy I need doubley quick.

Breakin' Down The Power of The Superfood Smoothie ::

Meal Replacement (as long as it includes all 3 macronutrients (a protein, a fat, + a carbohydrate)

Solid Energy (We're talking bona-fide benefits from from the fruit and veg or added chia, etc.) (stabilizing your blood sugar. )
Fibre Fantastic (from the fruit and veg or added chia, etc.) (stabilising your blood sugar. )

Easily Assimilated

Stockpile of Nutrients

Regulate! (like a broom sweeping through, on a mission to export the bad stuff)

Meet your fruit & veggie requirements. (way easily!)

Anti-aging + Beautifying ( antioxidants + hydrating is the ultimate equation)

Keeps Cravings at Bay: ( This is a big bonus! include a smoothie and watch your sweet (unwanted) cravings diminish. Add cinnamon (blood sugar balancing) and its even more effective.

Kiddos love them! They have fun making them and even more fun drinking them.

Comfort Food Fix!…You can make smoothie's taste like a treat! Add Raw Chocolate for a tasty plus mighty antioxidant hit.

I personally love to switch it up with whatever i've got on hand or looking for a particular reason to fuel up.

If not my most favourite thing about Superfood Smoothies is the versatily plus creativity they allow, you can literally become a mad scientist in the kitchen (lab coat free) with a blender and a couple of tasty fresh ingredients. You can get as basic or as complex as you want to and they’re always guaranteed to be filling plus satisfying, especially if your packing it with those sweet superfoods hook ups!

Superfood Smoothie's are also a winner for everyone who wants to incorporate antioxidant, nutritionally dense raw foods into their diet and wants a healthy, quick, easily digestible way that tastes freakishly fantastic.

There are literally a thousand and one ways to rock a superfood smoothie, but here’s my personal fool-proof strategy for stellar healthy, simple, sexy and delicious Superfood Smoothie results: that will quite frankly knock your little socks off!

Many or all of the following ingredients go into some rotation of my daily blender expeditions, for well-rounded nutrients plus mad flavour.

Key Filling Ingredients:

NUT MILK
Pour in about a cup or more as needed of unsweetened nut or seed milk . Almond, Coconut & Hemp are my personal favourite's for healthy plus delicious creaminess sans the dairy. I can always be found having plenty on hand, hooking up my smoothies to make them super creamy and milk shake like! (See Post on: How to Make Nut Milks 101) Allergic to nuts? Try hemp milk, coconut milk, ricemilk, or soymilk instead. In a rush? Nut Butters become Instant Milk! Raw Almond Butter makes an awesome real nut substitute, with that to "die" for amaretto flavour. Holyum.

SWEET SUPPORT
Fresh fruit is not only going to give the blend the bulk and denisty, it’s going to add a whole food sweet hit too boot. Banana’s will make it thick and creamy like a dream whilst provide more natural sugars and flavor. – a great base for any smoothie.
Frozen Fruit will make it frosty cool whilst aiding as a thickener, sweet choices would be blueberries, strawberries, pineapple chunks, mango etc. Berries are my ultimate favourite in smoothies plus an antixodiant injection bonus!
Freeze when ripe and always have them on hand!!

NUTS, SEEDS & HEALTHY FATS
You got to love that staying power of healthy fats! The addition of fat (and protein) slows down the absorption of sugar into the blood stream, keeping your energy levels stable and your tummy satisfied.
Throw in some avocado (you know I will take any opportunity to give my beloved avocado a guernsey) and you get a creamy, sweet, delicious smoothie that would make anyone “green” with envy!
Chia Seeds, Hemp Seeds, Flax Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds all make it into the blender party on the regular.
Coconut Oil (not only a great whole food with bona fide benefits, tastes delicious and will enhance the buttery factor of any smoothie it is added to) YESUM.

SUPERFOODS
Oh where do we begin?
Get ambitious and choose your own blend of powders in any amount that feels intuitively right for YOU or find a high-quality whole-food premixed blend.
Top Superfoods of choice for me personally are: raw chocolate powder (cacao), shilajit, mucuna powder, blue green algae like Spirulina and Chlorella, Vitamineral Green, bee pollen, cordyceps powder, reishi powder, maca, camu camu powder, lucuma berry powder, fresh aloe, vanilla bean powder and purple corn extract. You can source much of these from VivaPure.co.uk of course.

SPROUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!
Sprouts are a power food to get addicted to! I'm talking Buckwheat, Alfalfa, Sunflower Greens, whatever is hanging out in the fridge gets thrown into my smoothies.

FLAVOUR ENHANCERS
This can be any sweet herbs & spices such as Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Vanilla, Mesquite
Or flavour extracts or essences such as Almond and Peppermint.
My personal favourite super sweetener is Lucuma. I add it to everything!!
Medicine Flower Flavour Extract's are where its AT in smoothie's. I cannot begin to tell you how much these have taken my culinary of the blended expeditions to new heights! Cherry, Raspberry, Dark Chocolate, Coffee. Holy shiitake! The flavour combinations are endless.

SUPER TONIC BREWIN'
And this is the step that takes the smoothie to one that will knock your little socks off just that little bit more! An outrageous tonic or herb tea can replace about half the water you put into the smoothie or the nut milk base of a smoothie. Try Pau'darco and Nettle for a powerful and slightly sweet offering.

FINAL WORD ON SUPERFOOD SMOOTHING
Of course the biggest rule is to customise, customise, customise until it becomes your unique and perfect blend! Make your suprfood smoothie into something of a daily “healthy insurance policy,” as no matter what happens food-wise the rest of the day, you’ve had at least ONE amazingly super-charged meal to keep you going strong. Your body will love you for it.

Sip your morning smoothie mindfully, allowing time to “chew” the nutrients and stomach to give you feedback.

I am also a huge fan of garnishing my said smoothie with a sprinkle of cacao nibs, bee pollen, hemp seeds and goji berries for texture and an extra boost, to boot.

Ultimately, there are millions of combos to try. A lot of it is pure experimentation.

Kevin Gianni’s Signature Smoothie
