We recently graced our ears upon the enlightening "The Truth & Lies on B12" webinar with David Rainosheck, where the information discussed was pivotal to say the least! For those of you who missed it, we would love to share with you some highlights from this important disclosure on B12.

Rainosheck further stressed the importance of a healthy digestive system for effective B12 assimilation, and paticularly how B12 absorption relies heavily on strong stomach acids. When low stomach acid occurs, this reduces the intrinsic factor - which is needed to assist in the absorption and final process of vitamin B12.
Naturally, due to the modern un-natural ways of living (chronic stress, over use of recreational or pharmecuetical drugs, obesity, toxicity, bad bacteria in the stomach, constipation, poor nutrient absorption, digestive issues and so on) decreased stomach acids are a major factor nowadays and hence the high rate deficency of this all important (but hugely overlooked) vitamin.
The Role B12 Play's
The main function of vitamin B12 is to maintain and produce healthy red blood cells. Although all cells need to have ample vitamin B12 in order to keep strong and avoid deterioration, white blood cells paticularly require vitamin B12 in order to keep the immune system functioning up to par. (and we all know what happens if the immune system isn't up to par.)
Strangely enough, vitamin B12 alone can not be absorbed by the body effortlessly. This is where a strong and properly functioning stomach (acid) are needed, in order to break down the B12 vitamin. The stomach makes intrinsic factor, a protein produced by the stomach to aid in the absorption of the vitamin B12 into the small intestine and also allows for larger quantities to be absorbed by the body.
Rainosheck describes the difference between your B12 levels being in check and being low or defecient is like dial up on your internet compared to high speed bandwidth. Your just not going to run the same.
The Different B12's
It turns out that virtually all B12 supplementation available on the market today or that found in all plant-based food sources is of the non-human active form of the vitamin known as "B12 Analogue's" also known as "Cyannocabolimin" which not only can the body not use them, but they temporarily block the body's access to the 'real' B12. Rainosheck note's that this "junk" form of B12 is the kind they also add to cereals and power bars etc.
Does this mean we should stop eating plant-based food sources that contain B12 analogues such as barley and spirulina? Absolutley not - they are still excellent food's and provide all sorts of vital nutrients. However, just don't depend on them to adequately top up your B12 reserves.

Historicially, humans have relied on three main sources for B12: Animal foods, Plant foods and Probioitics. Since non human active B12 (B12 analogue's) is what we tend to find in all plant based foods, Rainosheck points out that eating animal products to extract adequate B12 , would mean eating more animal foods that would be deemed good for your overall health. Therefore, dietary sources alone cannot be relied upon for adequate intake of human-active B12.
The only real answer then, if you suspect you are low or deficient, is supplementation. Getting tested will give you definite results, just make sure you ask for the "urinary MMA test." According to the Rainosheck, it's the only one that's accurate. Rainosheck informs us that any type of blood test taken gives false positives because they count the B12 analogues. Despite the fact that huge amount of clinical research shows that "cyanocobalamin" it an ineffective form of B12, many doctors still use it for B12 injection's.
